This is a much more convenient way to determine what's on the opposite side of the world than digging through the earth. If you were to dig, you would face the impossible task of digging through: continental crust, mantle, outer core, inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust once again.
All that to likely end up in the middle of an ocean somewhere. What if you did want to dig to the other side of the world? You'd probably want to take a look at the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia. This borehole was drilled as an attempt to drill as deep as possible in the earth's crust. The well, which began drilling in finished in at 40, feet and is the deepest man-made hole on in the world.
Unfortunately, they were hardly able to skim the surface of earth's crust, let alone drill into the mantle. I'd suggest sticking with a more theoretical approach to digging through to the opposite side of the world. The name Antipodes refers to two antipodal points that are situated on the exact opposite side of the world from one another.
Curious to calculate your antipode by hand? First, figure out the latitude and longitude of your current location. Then, take the latitude and convert it to the opposite hemisphere. For instance, if you're located in New York City your latitude is In the case of New York City again, you would subtract But this is just a saying, because, in reality, if you dig a straight tunnel, in most areas, of Europe or United States you will come out in the ocean.
The only places where a straight hole will emerge in China ar parts in Argentina and Chile. In the Northern Hemisphere, "the Antipodes" is often used to refer to Australia and New Zealand , and "Antipodeans" to their inhabitants.
There are no non-stop scheduled flights between any two antipodal locations by commercial airline service. Since 11 October , the longest non-stop scheduled airline flight by great circle distance is between Singapore and Newark, New Jersey at 15, km.
Decimal degrees DD express latitude and longitude geographic coordinates as decimal fractions and are an alternative to using degrees, minutes, and seconds DMS. Positive latitudes are north of the equator, negative latitudes are south of the equator. Positive longitudes are east of Prime Meridian, negative longitudes are west of the Prime Meridian.
Latitude and longitude are usually expressed in that sequence, latitude before longitude. Our coordinates converter is an easy to use tool which helps with the conversion from a decimal degrees format DD to a degrees minutes seconds format DMS and back. Modify the text in the input fields, then click outside the field to convert the coordinates.
