Updated October 26th, by George Chrysostomou: The Wizarding World is constantly throwing up new secrets about its famous creatures, locations, and characters.
One of the least talked about witches is Narcissa Malfoy, but there's so much more to explore about Draco's mother! Draco eventually went on to marry Astoria Greengrass, despite some of his other on and off again relationships throughout his early years. Astoria was exactly the sort of person that Draco needed to ground himself. However, the suspected Slytherin member wasn't well-liked by Draco's mother.
Narcissa didn't at all agree with Astoria's attitude towards blood tolerance. Despite being of a pure-blooded family herself, Astoria certainly didn't hold the same views as the rest of the Malfoy family. Narcissa was often overlooked in her family, perhaps due to the far more charismatic nature of her sister. She struggled within her family to always agree on how they should behave within the wizarding community.
As the years went on she had larger power struggles with her sister Bellatrix. As late as the return of the Dark Lord himself, Narcissa had huge fights over who was in charge of the Malfoy household. This struggle was evident even up until she lied to Voldemort, finally going against what Bellatrix would have wanted her to do.
Much like her husband, Narcissa very much valued the finer things in life. This was a trait somewhat shared by the rest of the family. However, Narcissa took it a step further. After the battle, the family was reunited in the Great Hall , where they seemed uncomfortable with their predicament, but did not leave. However, as Narcissa betrayed Voldemort and left him, the entire Malfoy family was granted a reprieve and avoided incarceration in Azkaban.
Narcissa Malfoy was described as tall, slim, "nice looking", and very pale, with blue eyes, long blonde hair, and a clear, cold voice. Despite her physical differences to her sisters, Bellatrix and Andromeda, Harry Potter did describe her as resembling Bellatrix somewhat, though Narcissa was as fair as Bellatrix was dark.
Narcissa's beauty was somewhat marred by her donning an expression that suggested that she was sniffing dung whenever she was in the company of those she considered her inferiors. Narcissa on the Black family tree tapestry. Narcissa was a very proud woman who frequently displayed a haughty and disdainful attitude, looking down upon others as she believed strongly in the importance of blood purity and valued her family's wealth.
While she treated most people coldly, [30] Narcissa was very loving towards her family as well as devoted to them. Narcissa had a close relationship with her sister Bellatrix despite their differing temperaments and personality traits. Narcissa and her husband, Lucius Malfoy , were shown to have an affectionate and loving relationship. Narcissa and Lucius both enjoyed being members of the social elite, and loved and spoiled their only child.
Unlike Bellatrix, who did not hold love for her husband , Narcissa truly loved Lucius. Narcissa was very upset when he was briefly imprisoned in Azkaban and became defensive when others mentioned his failures. Narcissa adored her only child, Draco , and was very protective of him. Narcissa was terrified to the point of hysteria when Draco was ordered by Lord Voldemort to kill Albus Dumbledore. Narcissa suspected that Voldemort meant him to fail as punishment for her husband 's failure in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries.
To help him, Narcissa went to Severus Snape and begged for his assistance, whereupon she asked of him to make the Unbreakable Vow in which he promised to take over Draco's task if he failed.
Narcissa and her husband Lucius did not think highly of her, as she raised their grandson Scorpius to have a more tolerant view on Muggles and likely Muggle-borns, half-bloods, Squibs or even non-human magical creatures. Because of this, family gatherings were often fraught with tension. It is likely they see Astoria as a blood traitor because of this. Her relationship with Scorpius is unknown.
Narcissa appeared to have a fairly affectionate and close relationship with her older sister Bellatrix. The two fondly called each other by their nicknames of "Cissy" and "Bella". Bellatrix accompanied Narcissa to see Snape at Spinner's End , in spite of her distrust for Severus Snape and belief that they should not discuss the task Voldemort assigned in secret. Narcissa was also one of the only people who was able to question Bellatrix's authority without unleashing Bellatrix's anger.
It is not known whether Narcissa knew about Bellatrix's daughter from Voldemort, but Delphini was born at the Malfoy Manor. If Narcissa did know, then it is possible that she continued to keep this a secret for many years to come to protect not only her niece but also her own family from any public reaction to the idea that the Dark Lord had a child and this child was born at the Malfoys' home.
Narcissa's relationship with her other late cousin, Regulus Black , Sirius's younger brother, is unknown, though judging by Regulus's inclination towards the pure-blood supremacist ideals of the Blacks, which led him to follow Lord Voldemort and become one of his Death Eaters , the same circle to which her husband belonged, it is likely that she and he had a good relationship and maintained contact, or at least held him in higher esteem than Sirius, who earned his family's repudiation for his rejection of their ideals.
It is unknown whether she knew of her cousin's betrayal to the Dark Lord in an attempt to keep the life of his house elf, Kreacher , safe, but if so, it is likely that she regretted the event, rather than being outraged at the lack of loyalty to Voldemort that Regulus may have expressed to him at the end. The confidences between Kreacher, Regulus' house elf, with her and Bellatrix, could also be an indicator of the good relationship she may have had with his late master, beyond a simple response to the good treatment he may have received from the two of them, which led him to betray Sirius, in revenge for the mistreatment he had dealt with on his part, and was instrumental in his death.
Narcissa did not hold her late cousin Sirius Black or her older sister, Andromeda Tonks , in high regard, presumably because they were both " blood traitors " who were disowned by the Black family. Bellatrix claimed that she and Narcissa had not seen Andromeda since she married Muggle-born wizard Ted Tonks , which would have occurred in the early s.
Well, you know his opinion of Dumbledore — the man's such a Mudblood-lover — and Durmstrang doesn't admit that sort of riffraff. But Mother didn't like the idea of me going to school so far away. Father says Durmstrang takes a far more sensible line than Hogwarts about the Dark Arts. Durmstrang students actually learn them, not just the defense rubbish we do In one passage, here, author Rowling does a few skillful things — she establishes Durmstrang as a more menacing environment than Hogwarts, while emphasizing Draco's loving relationship with his mother, and expanding on the rifts of opinion within the wizarding world.
If what Draco says its true — and there's no reason to suspect it's not the truth, as he's among friends and not paying attention to who might be listening — his mother's love has influenced the outcome of Voldemort's attempt to take over the world in more than one sense. Hermione, who always knows more about what's going on than her hapless guy friends, tells them, "I wish he had gone, then we wouldn't have to put up with him.
It's not simply a matter of making life easier for Harry, although that would certainly have been the case. In an odd way, Draco pushed Harry to new heights literally. It would appear that the Malfoy family is in disgrace, and much to her dismay, Bellatrix is seated near them. Narcissa is unable to identify Harry, despite recognizing Hermione, and orders Draco to look; Draco is also uncertain, though Harry believes that he is only feigning that uncertainty.
Narcissa is halted from summoning the Dark Lord by Bellatrix, who has seen the Sword of Gryffindor , and believes that her vault at Gringotts has been compromised; knowing that the vault was the hiding place of something highly valued by Voldemort, Bellatrix is aware that Voldemort will be furious if that vault has been infiltrated. Bellatrix by and large takes charge of proceedings at this point and Narcissa retreats into the background. When Harry has fallen in the Forbidden Forest after confronting Voldemort, Narcissa, presumably because she is closest, is asked by Lord Voldemort to check if Harry Potter is alive.
Narcissa sees that he is, and asks if her son is all right, then lies to Voldemort that Harry is dead. Harry guesses that she has done this because only if Harry is believed dead will she be able to get into Hogwarts castle to re-unite with Draco. Her last appearance is in the Great Hall, after the battle.
She is with Lucius and Draco, standing somewhat apart from the celebrations around them. While neither she nor Voldemort thinks of it as such, Narcissa's capacity for love, and her love for Draco are a strength.
The fact that her love for her son outweighs her loyalty to Voldemort demonstrates how even within Voldemort's inner circles, love is still the force that causes his ultimate downfall. Narcissa's love for her son, possibly equivalent to Lily's love for Harry, gives her the ability to lie to Voldemort that Harry is dead, despite what Harry feels is a quite visible pulse. Narcissa here exhibits the exact type of love Voldemort never understood. This type of love caused his downfall 17 years ago, and it is the cause of his downfall in the final book.
During the scene at Spinner's End in the beginning of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince , Narcissa practically begs Severus Snape to make an Unbreakable Vow to protect her son, even though her sister Bellatrix Lestrange strongly opposes this action. Narcissa does this even though she is under Voldemort 's orders to not speak of Draco 's mission.
